Escape From Routine
Peter Brown is our guest blogger this week and he writes....
I am writing this on a bright autumnal morning after three wonderful days at the seaside. We have been so fortunate because we chose a time when a mini heat-wave arrived. This leads me into the idea that from time immemorial mankind has had opportunities to escape from the routine of hunting, gathering and parenting. These escapes are still a vital component of life, providing improved sanity and a chance to bond with family and friends.
Early historical records show that chances to escape took place for different peoples from diverse areas over the ages. The earliest people had seasonal escapes which were often linked to the sun's or moon's movements.
The tragedy is that many people in the western world have lost these cultural and community escapes and are the worse for that. Fortunately a lot of people are able to replace them with occasions involving family or friends.
We often forget the great value of these events to us personally, as couples and as communities. The physiological needs for the average person still include interaction with others beyond the family and an occasional break in routine. This is self-evident but I enjoy the anecdotal stories about the many great thinkers over the last centuries who all took time out. These include people like Samuel Johnson, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison.
To ensure that we get our breaks in routine we should set aside time for our family and the broader community. It is good to plan quarterly events that we can enjoy and value and to devote time to new people and fresh experiences.
To summarise, I use the words of Robert Louis Stevenson, a great example of someone who escaped from routine:
"As yesterday is history, and tomorrow may never come,
I have resolved from this day on, I will do all the business
I can honestly, have all the fun I can reasonably, do all
the good I can willingly, and save my digestion
by thinking pleasantly".
So plan your calendar now, make time to break the routine and do something different and fun.
