How to start a conversation with strangers!
Many people when considering attending a networking event get very nervous about starting a conversation with strangers. Learning to make small talk is important so that you will be able to begin to build relationships. This is not a skill everyone has but it is one you can develop. Here are a few ideas on what to talk about and a great way to build your confidence in this area.
When things about what to talk about topics can include current news, the venue you are at, the food, you day so far and of course what you do. Resist the urge to monopolise the conversation with your business. Ask questions to the other person. Don't be opinionated and bring strong views to the fore.
The getting-to-know each other phase will include where they live, their family and why they started their business. It is best to stick to these neutral topics. People usually naturally want to talk about themselves and these things should break the ice and keep the words flowing.
By considering these small talk topics you will never run out of things to say. Keep conversation quick and casual. If you feel you want to move on and talk to others end politely with a comment such as getting a coffee refill or needing the loo!. Make sure you end the chat with a comment about how nice it was to meet them and never ever shove your business card at someone!
